July 14 Weekend Roundup: Planet Earth Belongs to the Apes
Our friendly neighborhood superhero was beaten by our friendly neighborhood monkeys, as War for the Planet of the Apes outperformed Spider-Man: Homecoming at the box office last weekend. In this battle of rebooted franchises, the third apes’ movie stole the top spot by grossing $56.3M well within the upper range of our model’s predictions. On a lesser scale, Wish Upon underperformed and came at 7th place with $5.5M over about 2,250 theaters.
The below chart shows our forecasts (lower bound, mean, upper bound) from last Friday next to several other industry forecasts and actual performance.
|War for the Planet of the Apes||$56.3M||($50.6M, $53.1M, $56M)||$54M||$70M||$55M|
|Wish Upon||$5.5M||($6.9M, $7.2M, $7.3M)||$6.5M||$7M||$7M|
We’ll be back later this week with forecasts for Dunkirk, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets, and Girls Trip.
