March 31 Weekend Roundup: 'Boss Baby' Tops the Beast

This weekend, The Boss Baby thwarted Beauty and the Beast’s record-breaking run at the top of the box office charts with an opening of $49M. The mischievous baby, voiced by Alec Baldwin, solidified its boss status by over-performing industry predictions.

On the other hand, we have Ghost in the Shell disappointing its big budget and hype as our models predicted. It will be interesting to see whether Hollywood changes its strategy regarding the other anime adaptations that are currently in development.

We are pleased to note that our mean accuracy for this weekend vastly outperformed standard industry tracking. The below chart shows our forecasts (lower bound, mean, upper bound) from last Friday next to several other industry forecasts and actual performance.

Title Actual Pilot BoxOffice.com BoxOfficeMojo.com The-Numbers.com
The Boss Baby $49M ($39.6M, $42.0M, $44.4M) $32M $35.4M $31M
Ghost in the Shell $19M ($21.9M, $22.2M, $22.5M) $28M $32M $34M

We’ll be back later this week with forecasts for Going in Style and Smurfs: The Lost village.
