May 5 Weekend Roundup: 'Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2' opens to $145M

In the largest box office jump for a Marvel Cinematic Universe sequel, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 opened at $145M. This jump is over $50M more than its predecessor’s $94M opening weekend. While $145M is very impressive, it is, nonetheless, a step down from the previous two years of MCU’s May debuts of The Avengers 2 ($191M) and Captain America: Civil War ($179M).

The below chart shows our forecasts (lower bound, mean, upper bound) from last Friday next to several other industry forecasts and actual performance.

Title Actual Pilot BoxOffice.com BoxOfficeMojo.com The-Numbers.com
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 $145M ($156.8M, $158.5M, $160.2M) $160M $158M $156M
